Even though the "technical" peak of the Perseid meteor shower was Wednesday night August 13th, very similar type meteor showers are still likely to occur for the next couple of nights as well! Plus, the forecast for the sky Thursday night and likely Friday night should have much more clearer skies versus what we had Wednesday night! So, if you are interested, here is what you need to know : Every summer our area has an opportunity to see one of the most dramatic and noticeable meteor showers of the year. Between July 14 and September 1, the Earth's orbit passes through the remnants of the Swift-Tuttle comet. The comet debris passes through the Earth's atmosphere and causes those shooting stars that you see in the sky. Here is the forecast for Thursday night : Look in the northeastern sky. The Perseid meteor shower is named that way because the shooting stars appear to be radiating outward from the constellation Perseus. You should also try to go to an area with as little ambient light as possible. Go as far away from any city or village lights. The darker the area is where you are, the better the chance your eye will grab a hold of any meteor showers. The constellation Perseus rises after 10:00 PM. Remember that the meteor showers appear to radiate outward from this constellation. How should I watch the Perseids? : --You should go outside and lie on your back on the ground. You may need to allow up to 45 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the very dark sky. That way, you will be able to pick up as many meteor showers as possible. Interesting information : --This meteor shower is caused by the Earth's orbit crossing into the leftover of the comet called 109P/Swift-Tuttle. --The "Swift" part of that actually has a Central New York connection! --Lewis Swift of Marathon, New York, visually discovered it on July 16, 1862, using an 11-centimeter (4.3-inch) refractor lens telescope.
