Wallace beaten on points in IBF title eliminator

Conor Wallace lost a unanimous decision to Ben Whittaker in an IBF Light Heavyweight title eliminator in Birmingham. Despite a strong finish by Wallace that saw Whittaker nearly knocked down, the judges awarded the victory to Whittaker.
Why it matters
The result sets up a potential title fight for Whittaker against Dmitry Bivol, while highlighting the competitive nature of the light heavyweight division.
Conor Wallace took defending champion Ben Whittaker the distance in their IBF Light Heavyweight title eliminator fight and finished the stronger of the two fighters but was beaten via a unanimous decision in Birmingham.
Newry man Wallace, who has been based in Australia for all of his career, took perhaps too long to really get going in the fight and while a dazed Whittaker was holding on for the bell in the final round, once it came, there was little doubt as to the result.
The judges scored the bout 117-111, 116-112, 115-113, all in favour of Whittaker who will now fight for the IBF Light Heavyweight title.
