Wales turns 80,000 used nappies into road-surfacing material

What if the disposable diaper changed a baby’s day, and then went on to help build the road outside your home? An unusual recycling experiment in Wales has transformed thousands of used diapers into an unexpected ingredient for road construction, offering a glimpse into how everyday waste could become a valuable resource. Carmarthenshire County Council’s official website says that in the past, they teamed up with local recycling company Nappicycle on a trial project aimed at solving two problems at once: the growing amount of nappy waste and the effect of traditional road maintenance on the environment. The first trial, on the B4336 at Pontweli in March 2024, took around four tons of used diapers—the equivalent of some 80,000 diapers—out of landfill.
