VW Tera SUV Debuts In South Africa As TENGO - To Be Locally Made
Volkswagen has announced that its new Tera SUV, currently produced in Brazil, will be manufactured in South Africa starting in 2027 under the name 'Tengo'. The vehicle will be positioned as an affordable entry-level SUV to compete with rising market share from Indian and Chinese automotive brands.

That will change next year, as Volkswagen has announced plans to manufacture the Tera in South Africa as well. However, Tera will go on sale as the 'Tengo' in South Africa. There will be some changes as well to suit local preferences. VW Tengo (Tera) production plans, market positioning Tengo was recently unveiled during an event marking the 75th anniversary celebration of VW South Africa. In the company's SA lineup, Tengo will be positioned below the T-Cross (Taigun). Launch is scheduled for 2027. VW Tengo will be manufactured at the brand's Kariega factory, which has been operational since 1951.
