Villagers petition Collector seeking retrieval of public crematorium

A section of the residents of Govindanendal village submitted a petition at the Collector’s Office here on Wednesday (October 7, 2026), demanding retrieval of a public crematorium near Ramanathapuram that has allegedly been encroached upon by an individual.
More than 100 residents of Govindanendal, which falls under R.S. Madai revenue village near Ramanathapuram, submitted the petition with District Revenue Officer V. Sankaranarayanan at the Collectorate, urging immediate intervention of the district administration to restore the crematorium land for public use.
Speaking to reporters later, the villagers said their community had been utilising a 60-cent plot of land as a public crematorium for many years, where infrastructural facilities like a cremation shed and boundary wall were established by the government.
