Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s visit to Bengaluru, scheduled for August 3, has kindled public curiosity because the State had secured Cauvery water — though not the required quantum — after its emissaries undertook similar missions in the mid-1980s.
The materials available with The Hindu archives reveal that during January and February 1986 and 1987, Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) of the AIADMK despatched his Ministers to Bengaluru to meet their counterparts and Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde and persuade them to release water for saving the paddy crop raised during the long-term samba cultivation season.
In February 1986, Ministers for Irrigation and Public Works P.U. Shanmugam and Y.S.M. Yusuf went to Bengaluru separately in a gap of four days to meet their counterparts and Hegde.
