Vignan University launches centre of excellence on Blue Economy
Vignan’s University has inaugurated a Centre of Excellence on the Blue Economy to focus on sustainable marine resource management and ocean technology. The initiative includes partnerships with national research institutes to foster innovation and skill development.
Why it matters
Advancing the blue economy is essential for sustainable development, climate resilience, and the growth of ocean-based industries.
Sustainable utilisation of marine resources, while protecting the marine environment, is essential for future economic growth, said National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru, Director Dr. Shailesh Nayak. He was speaking after inaugurating the Centre of Excellence on Blue Economy at Vignan’s University in Vadlamudi, Guntur district, on Saturday (August 22, 2026).
Established with the theme “Sustainable Ocean–Thriving Future,” the centre will focus on coastal conservation, ocean technologies, blue growth, research, innovation, policy and skill development. Dr. Nayak said the blue economy should be integrated with climate change, ecological balance, and livelihoods, with environmental conservation and human safety remaining central.
Union Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala said fisheries, shipping, offshore and wave energy, tourism and logistics offered vast opportunities. He called for coordinated efforts by governments, industry and educational institutions and urged students and start-ups to develop technological solutions.
