An objective, video-based corneal chemical sensitivity test can effectively, noninvasively detect diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a pilot study published in Cornea.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Department of Veterans Affairs Iowa City Health Care System, evaluated a novel functional assay that measures reflex blinking and squinting induced by hyperosmolar eye drops.

The investigators evaluated 14 patients with type 2 diabetes and verified DPN alongside 8 nondiabetic controls. They quantified the percentage of time eyelids remained closed for 50 seconds following administration of an isotonic saline solution vs a hypertonic 5% NaCl solution.
