Vance's 'indentured servants' remark deeply offensive: Government
The Indian government has strongly criticized US Vice President JD Vance for referring to H-1B visa holders as 'foreign indentured servants.' This diplomatic friction follows US restrictions on the PERM Green Card program, which India views as an affront to its skilled professionals.
Why it matters
The rhetoric highlights growing tensions in US-India relations regarding immigration policy, labor mobility, and the treatment of foreign tech workers.
NEW DELHI: Following a long period of strained India-US ties, the gloves came off finally as India hit out at US Vice President JD Vance for labelling H-1B visa holders and foreign tech professionals as foreign indentured servants, a characterisation New Delhi slammed as deeply offensive and unwarranted. The scathing response followed the US announcement about the suspension of many tech companies, including several from India, from PERM Green Card programme. Govt acknowledged the development may impact the permanent residency process of eligible employees even though the validity of existing H-1B visas or the status of those visa holders and dependants will remain unaffected.Vance had reinforced the announcement by declaring that American workers cannot be laid off and then replaced with foreign indentured servants.
