Uzhavar Sandhai Amma Unavagam in Tiruchi to get a major upgrade with a new building

Why it matters
It illustrates the challenges of urban planning and the maintenance of essential public welfare services in growing cities.
Tiruchi Corporation has planned to demolish and reconstruct the Amma Unavagam near the Uzhavar Sandhai in Anna Nagar to improve access to the newly opened integrated sports club behind the canteen.
According to Corporation sources, the canteen is proposed to be demolished, and a new one built at a nearby location. The move is aimed at providing direct access from the main road to the integrated sports club.
An arch entrance to the sports club is proposed to be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹35 lakh. An estimate was being prepared for the new Amma Unavagam, sources said.
The Amma Unavagam provides breakfast and lunch at subsidised rates. The canteen near the Uzhavar Sandhai attracts a considerable number of people due to its location and is considered one of the better-functioning Amma Unavagams in the city.
