Along Utah’s scenic Mirror Lake Highway, a large restoration project is showing why forest management is about more than planting trees or clearing brush. The recently completed Upper Provo Stewardship Project treated 3,873 acres across the Upper Provo Watershed, combining juniper removal, conifer thinning, hazard tree work, aspen enhancement and wetland restoration. The value of that preparation became clear during the 2024 Yellow Lake Fire, which burned more than 33,000 acres across the surrounding landscape. When the fire reached areas treated earlier, including parts of Iron Mine Mountain, officials reported that fire behaviour changed and existing fuel breaks helped slow the blaze.
