US Suffers Major Military Losses in Imposed War on Iran, Congress Report Says
A report attributed to the Congressional Research Service claims that the US military has suffered significant aircraft losses during an ongoing conflict with Iran. The report details damage to advanced fighter jets and logistical aircraft, citing various incidents in the Middle East.
Why it matters
If accurate, these losses represent a major escalation and significant military setback for US forces in the region, with major geopolitical implications.
The report, titled “US Aircraft Combat Damage in Operation Epic Fury: Considerations for Congress,” provides a rare official accounting of the damage inflicted on US military forces, including some of Washington’s most advanced and expensive aircraft.
The Congressional Research Service said the list was compiled from media reports, statements by the US Department of Defense and Central Command, and Defense Department inspector general reports.
The report cautioned that the figure could change because some information remains classified, military operations are continuing and responsibility for some incidents remains difficult to establish.
Some damaged aircraft may also have returned to service following repairs.
Among the fighter losses are 12 F-15E aircraft.
Three F-15Es were destroyed by US friendly fire over Kuwait on March 2, while another was shot down over Iran on April 5.
