US death row inmate Christa Pike 'angry and confused' after failed execution, lawyer says
Death row inmate Christa Pike is reportedly confused and angry after surviving a botched lethal injection attempt in Tennessee. Her legal team has successfully petitioned a judge to preserve all evidence from the execution chamber as they investigate the failure.
Why it matters
The case raises significant legal and ethical questions regarding the death penalty, state execution protocols, and the rights of inmates during failed procedures.
CHRISTA PIKE IS “angry and confused” after regaining consciousness almost six days after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her, one of her lawyers has said.
Randy Spivey was speaking today after a judge told the state to preserve evidence related to the case.
Pike (50) survived after executioners tried to give her two lethal doses of pentobarbital on 30 September. She was sentenced to death for the 1995 beating and stabbing death of her classmate Colleen Slemmer.
“She is angry and confused about everything right now. She is very aware of what they did to her up to a point,” Spivey said during a news conference.
“I do not have an explanation for what happened between Monday night and Tuesday morning, but I do know she has a long road to recovery.
