UPDF dismisses western media reports on Muhoozi as imperialist propaganda

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially rejected international media reports accusing General Muhoozi Kainerugaba of human rights abuses. The military described the allegations as imperialist propaganda and character assassination.
Why it matters
This reflects the growing friction between the Ugandan government and international media regarding human rights and political succession.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has rejected allegations of human rights abuses made against the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, describing recent reports in the international media as unfounded, scandalous, and part of a sustained character assassination campaign.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, October 10, Col Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, singled out an article published on October 8, 2026, in the US-based newspaper The New York Times , authored by writer Megan K. Stack and titled “The Authoritarian Future is Already Here.”
Col Magezi stated that the article regurgitated long-held opposition narratives and made baseless claims regarding Gen Muhoozi’s conduct, specifically referring to allegations made by exiled writer Kakwenza Rukirabashaija.
