Unifor Stellantis workers in Ontario vote 97% in favour of strike mandate with talks still stalled

Unifor members at Stellantis facilities in Ontario have voted 97% in favor of a strike mandate as contract negotiations remain stalled. The union is primarily concerned with job security and the future of the Brampton assembly plant, which the company intends to sell.
Why it matters
This vote signals significant labor unrest in the Canadian automotive sector, potentially impacting North American supply chains and manufacturing stability.
Two days of voting were held on the weekend.
The workers are stationed at factories in Windsor, Toronto and the idled Brampton assembly plant.
Unifor to hold strike authorization votes at Stellantis
Unifor represents over 9,000 Stellantis workers in Canada.
It has said any potential strike action involving the Ontario workers remains its last resort.
“When you deliver a strike authorization vote north of 97 per cent across our Stellantis workplaces, you send a powerful message of unity and strength," said James Stewart, Unifor Local 444 president, in a social media video released Monday morning.
"You have given us the tools to get this done.”
The automaker responded to a request for comment from CBC News on Monday morning.
