Underdogs could get home advantage in new Leinster format

Leinster GAA is considering a new championship structure for 2028 that may grant home advantage to underdogs in knockout games. The proposal aims to increase excitement and help lower-tier teams improve by providing more competitive opportunities.
Why it matters
Structural changes in regional sports leagues can significantly impact the development and competitiveness of smaller teams.
Leinster GAA chairperson Martin Byrne says the province will be open to the prospect of giving underdogs home advantage in knockout games under the council's proposed new championship structure.
A motion to Congress 2027 is being drafted following Leinster GAA management approval with a view to forming an eight-team provincial SHC, which would be split into two groups of four.
It is set to get the go-ahead for the 2028 season.
In that instance, Group 1 would comprise higher tier teams made up of the top four teams from the 2027 series.
Group 2 would feature the fifth and sixth-placed teams from ’27, along with the two Joe McDonagh Cup finalists.
Byrne revealed his council will remain open to the possibility of an underdog receiving home advantage in a knockout game.
