UN ‘pre-COP’ climate summit kicks off in Fiji

Fiji is hosting a UN 'pre-COP' climate summit in Nadi to highlight the urgent climate challenges faced by Pacific island nations. The event serves as a preparatory meeting for the upcoming COP31 global climate summit scheduled for next month in Turkey.
Why it matters
These regional summits are essential for ensuring that the voices of vulnerable island nations are integrated into global climate policy negotiations.
The UN "pre-COP" climate summit kicked off on Monday (October 5, 2026) in the Fijian city of Nadi, where Pacific leaders are seeking to draw the world's attention to life on the frontline of climate change.
"It is a great honour on behalf of the government and the people of Fiji, the honourable Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka to open the stakeholder programme of the Pacific pre-COP31," Fiji's Climate Minister Lynda Tabuya told the opening ceremony in Nadi.
