Uganda Law Society (ULS) has advised government to come up with a proper housing policy that will focus on ensuring that Ugandans get quality housing.

According to ULS vice president Antony Asiimwe, the policy must deal with the bottlenecks that have limited majority of Ugandans from having decent homes, including high taxes on building materials among others.

“Housing is very costly…simply because if you look at the cost of acquiring property, the building materials I think are one of the things that are highly taxed by our government, which makes it difficult for any ordinary Ugandan to own decent property, without going in debt, without hustling, without getting loans from banks,” he said.

He added: “So, if you make it so costly and less affordable, then so many Ugandans are going to suffer. So basically, we advise the government to have a proper housing policy.”
