KAMPALA, Aug 18 — Uganda and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on Tuesday signed an agreement to establish a UNODC office in Kampala, which officials said is expected to become one of the agency’s three largest operations globally.
The Host Country Agreement was signed at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters by Foreign Affairs Minister Adonia Ayebare and UNODC Regional Representative for Eastern Africa Ali Farouk Elbereir.
Elbereir said the planned office reflected Uganda’s strategic importance and stability and would strengthen cooperation against transnational organised crime.
The Kampala office will focus on wildlife trafficking, people smuggling, cybercrime, money laundering and corruption, according to the ministry.
UNODC is the United Nations agency responsible for helping countries combat illicit drugs, organised crime, corruption and terrorism.
