Uganda has thrown the race for the next UN Secretary-General wide open by nominating former diplomat Olara Otunnu, adding another African contender to a contest already shaped by questions of regional rotation and gender balance.
Otunnu once served as UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. He is better known in UN circles than he is for his unsuccessful presidential bid in 2011 under the Uganda People’s Congress, when he challenged President Yoweri Museveni.
His nomination also reflects a measure of compromise within Uganda’s political environment. Sources told The EastAfrican that his name emerged after President Museveni consulted peers in the East African region, suggesting a degree of consensus beyond Kampala.
