Udupi court sentences four persons to six months in jail for defaming SC couple

The Udupi Principal District and Sessions Judge, Kiran S. Gangannavar, has sentenced four persons to six months of simple imprisonment after finding them guilty of defaming a couple belonging to a Scheduled Caste and issuing death threats to them.
The judge sentenced Shobha and her daughter Chaitra, both from Alevoor village in Udupi district, and their friends Bhaskar Shetty and Bharath Ganiga to six months of simple imprisonment, and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 on each for an offence under Section 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He further sentenced the four to six months in jail and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 for each of the offences under Sections 3(1)(b), 3(1)(s), and 3(1)(z) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
