UCD researcher discovers 'lost' medieval castle... on UCD campus

A “LOST” MEDIEVAL Dublin castle has been “hiding in plain sight” on the campus of University College Dublin (UCD), a researcher from the university said.

The Norman Roebuck castle was built in the early 13th century, research indicates, and its remains were long thought to have been cleared away to allow for the construction of the present Roebuck Castle around 150 years ago.

However, research has found that the walls of the medieval castle are preserved within the walls of the current castle.

The author of the research, Prof Tadhg O’Keefe, said “UCD can now claim to have the oldest standing building on any university campus in Ireland”.

O’Keefe is a specialist in medieval architectural history at the UCD School of Archaeology.
