U.P. releases new sugarcane varieties eyeing increasing production
The Uttar Pradesh government has approved four new high-yield, disease-resistant sugarcane varieties to boost agricultural productivity. These varieties, developed by state and national research institutes, are intended to replace older, less efficient crops to improve sugar recovery for farmers.

Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday (October 4, 2026) said four new sugarcane varieties have been released for cultivation, adding it would contribute to increasing both sugarcane and sugar production. The government added, the approved early-maturing varieties are better in terms of yield and sugar recovery.
“A meeting of the Seed Cane and Sugarcane Variety Approval Sub-Committee was held recently, discussions regarding the release of new sugarcane varieties took place during the meeting, attended by sub-committee officials, Director UPCSR, scientists from the UP Council of Sugarcane Research (Shahjahanpur) and the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (Lucknow). Data concerning the yield and sugar content of new sugarcane varieties—proposed by the U.P. Council of Sugarcane Research, Shahjahanpur, were presented,” told Ministhy S., Uttar Pradesh Cane Commissioner and Managing Director State Sugar Corporation Limited, to The Hindu .
