Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel advised female students to prioritize becoming 'expert mothers' and maintaining family values alongside their professional careers. She also addressed concerns regarding drug abuse in university hostels and emphasized the need for stronger moral education.
Why it matters
The comments reflect ongoing debates in India regarding the intersection of traditional gender roles and the professional advancement of women.
Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Thursday (July 10, 2026) said women should strive to become "expert mothers" before aspiring to become IAS officers or teachers, emphasising family values, parental responsibility and character-building.
Addressing students, parents and faculty at the 41st convocation of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of State universities, said professional success should not come at the cost of family responsibilities.
She urged young women to continue their education and careers after marriage while contributing to the well-being of their families and society.
"Whether you become an IAS officer or a teacher, first become an expert mother. Everyone should know how to cook the food prepared at home," she said.
Ms. Patel said daughters should not discontinue their education after marriage and should use their knowledge and skills for nation-building.
