Two women from tea plantations ordained as CSI priests in Idukki

In a significant milestone, two women from the tea plantation sector in the Munnar hills of Idukki have been ordained to the priesthood in the Church of South India (CSI) diocese of Cochin. According to church authorities, Indira Iyyappan, 49, and Vijaya Karuppuswamy, 48, were ordained to the ministry on September 2 at CSI Christ Church, Munnar.
Presbyter Varghese Joseph of the Communication Department, CSI diocese of Cochin, stated that both served as deacons for the past two and a half years in CSI churches across Munnar and have now been elevated to the priesthood. “From now on, they can lead all services in the church. For the first time, two women priests from the plantation community have been ordained to the ministry,” said presbyter Joseph.
