Why it matters
These incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding public safety and gang-related violence in regional urban centers in India.
Two persons were murdered in separate incidents under Madurai City Police limits since Tuesday night.
In the first incident, one ‘Crime’ Mani, who was a noted property crime suspect, was found murdered under Jaihindpuram police station limits around Tuesday midnight.
The police said the deceased, along with one more person, was intercepted by a night patrol police team, when the two were riding a bike around 11 p.m. Since the duo were drunk, the police did not take them to the police station.
The police seized Mani’s motorbike and mobile phone and asked them to report at Jaihindpuram police station the next morning.
However, within a few minutes Mani was murdered by some unidentified persons who used a boulder for the crime, the police said.
