According to the police, around 3 a.m., a group of locals in Siliguri's Tarabari area intercepted a pick-up van and dragged the five passengers out. When they ran, the locals started chasing them, and got hold of four of them at the Dhimal Basti area. They brutally assaulted them leading to one dying on the spot. The rest were severely injured.
The mob also set their van ablaze during the altercation.
Another person from the group managed to escape and reached the Bagdogra police station. Soon the police reached the spot and rushed the victims to a hospital where another person died.
