Two Donegal schools added to the Safe Routes to School programme

Two schools in Donegal, Ireland, have been added to the Safe Routes to School programme to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety. The initiative includes infrastructure upgrades like new footpaths and crossings, which have been shown to increase active travel and reduce car usage.
Why it matters
Urban planning initiatives focused on school safety promote healthier lifestyles and reduce traffic congestion in local communities.
Two Donegal schools have been named in the latest phase of the Safe Routes to School programme.
Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana and Sessiaghoneill National School in Ballybofey have been included in the national initiative.
It is designed to install safety infrastructure near schools such as pencil-shaped bollards, colourful road markings, upgraded footpaths and enhanced pedestrian crossings to slow traffic.
There is also an active travel element to the scheme, with a survey of participating schools showing that cycling to school has increased by almost 49%, walking has increased by 8% and car usage has fallen by 10%.
Donegal Minister Charlie McConalogue says keeping schools as safe as possible is a priority: https://highlandradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/charlie-safe-routes.mp3
