A 58-year-old man has been charged after two people died and another two were seriously injured in Christchurch.
Police were called to an address on Olliviers Road, in the suburb of Phillipstown, overnight.
Detective Inspector Greg Murton said two people died at the scene, while two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
"The man will face two charges of murder, one charge of attempted murder and one for wounding with intent.
"He will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday 12 October."
Murton said police believed this was an isolated incident and are not seeking anyone else.
Police are wanting to reassure the public that there is no risk to their safety.
"Police want to reassure the public there is no risk to their safety but also appreciate this incident will be deeply upsetting and unsettling for those who reside in the area."
