Two cop suicides linked to betting debt, DGP cautions force

The Telangana Police DGP has urged officers to avoid online betting and seek help for financial stress following the suicides of two personnel. The department is emphasizing mental health support and warning against the dangers of addictive habits like gambling and substance abuse.
Why it matters
This highlights the growing concern over the impact of online gambling on the mental health and financial stability of public service employees.
Debt incurred through online betting was found to be the primary cause in inquiries into the suicides of two Telangana Police personnel in the past four months, prompting DGP C.V. Anand to appeal to the force to stay away from betting and seek help when facing financial difficulties.
On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on Thursday, the officer expressed that it was particularly distressing to see young and middle-aged constables taking their own lives after falling into debt through online betting. In the two cases, some personnel had sold land, borrowed money from friends and colleagues or taken loans at high interest rates, he said.
