Twelve fading galaxies expose a missing stage in the life of black hole jets

Astronomers have identified 12 'remnant' radio galaxies that are fading faster than previously expected after their central black hole jets shut down. This discovery provides new insights into the life cycles of galaxies and the behavior of supermassive black holes.

Radio galaxies can stretch across hundreds of thousands of light-years, yet their most dramatic structures eventually go quiet. A new analysis has caught 12 such galaxies after their enormous jets shut down, exposing a faint population that appears to fade faster and die younger than many previously known remnants.Researchers at the University of Cape Town and the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy examined 14 suspected remnant radio galaxies in the XMM–Newton Large-Scale Structure field. Twelve passed detailed spectral tests. Two turned out to still be active.The distinction matters because a radio galaxy does not simply vanish when its central engine shuts off.
