<p>Electricity use has skyrocketed in recent weeks as the country plunged into a big winter chill, Transpower says. </p> <p>In a post online, the owner and operator of the country's national high-voltage electricity grid said the country recorded eight of the 10 highest electricity demand peaks in its history over the past two weeks. </p> <p>Transpower said average electricity use reached 7415MW during <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/06/cold-snap-pushes-nzs-electricity-use-to-record-high-for-second-day/" target="_blank">yesterday's peak</a>, surpassing Wednesday's record of 7247MW.</p> <p>This demand was driven by <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/05/couple-of-degrees-colder-severe-frosts-to-grip-new-zealand-tonight/" target="_blank">freezing temperatures</a> across Aotearoa.
