Turmeric price crosses ₹20,000 a quintal in Erode

Turmeric prices in Erode have surged past ₹20,000 per quintal due to a combination of festival demand and supply shortages. Farmers report that drought conditions and irrigation water scarcity have significantly hampered local cultivation.
Why it matters
The price spike highlights the impact of climate-related agricultural challenges on commodity markets and local farmer livelihoods.
The price of finger turmeric crossed ₹20,000 a quintal at Erode Society here on Monday, with reduced arrivals and festival demand pushing up prices.
At Erode Society, finger turmeric was priced between ₹19,419 and ₹20,799 a quintal, while bulb turmeric was priced between ₹17,849 and ₹19,011. The price of finger turmeric rose by ₹1,539 a quintal compared with the price recorded at the society on October 9.
At the Erode Regulated Market, finger turmeric was priced between ₹13,569 and ₹20,119 a quintal, while bulb turmeric was priced between ₹12,099 and ₹18,400.
Farmers said turmeric prices had risen by over ₹3,000 a quintal in the past two weeks owing to drought conditions and a decline in arrivals at the markets.
