Tumours removed through transcranial microscopic surgery

A Neurosurgical team at Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur, has removed tumours extended from nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses to the skull base in three patients by adopting a complex procedure of a combination of advanced endoscopic techniques and transcranial microscopic surgery.

According to the hospital release, in all three cases, the team with assistance from an ENT team, used a microscopic approach through the skull to remove the tumour involving the skull base and intracranial region. The ENT team accessed the tumour endoscopically through the nose.

Following tumour removal, the neurosurgical team reconstructed the anterior cranial fossa, the front portion of the skull base separating the brain from the nasal and sinus cavities. This reconstruction was crucial to protect the brain and prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, which can increase the risk of serious infections such as meningitis.
