Residents have been evacuated after an unknown substance entered drains and an “odour of fuel” was reported in a Waikato town.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand carried out an evacuation of 10 homes in Kowhai St, Cottle Lane and George St in Tuakau this afternoon, while another two households self-evacuated.

Residents in neighbouring streets were urged to remain indoors with doors and windows closed to avoid possible exposure to fumes.
