His plans were announced yesterday, the same day Stelco in Hamilton announced it would lay off 500 workers due to the 50-per-cent tariffs imposed by the U.S. government.
Last year the tariffs also caused Algoma Steel to switch to using its electric arc furnace rather than a blast furnace earlier than planned, resulting in the loss of a thousand jobs in Sault Ste. Marie.
