Trump and Xi stress cooperation during Chinese White visit

Hear this story President Donald Trump lavished praise on Chinese President Xi Jinping, who arrived in the White House touting a gift of giant pandas, as simmering tensions between the two superpowers took a back seat during Xi's first state visit in more than a decade.

After pushing a big confrontation with Xi on trade issues last year before backing off, Trump declared that they had formed "a truly great friendship" in kicking off a day of feting the Chinese leader that includes an extravagant state dinner with fresh seabass on the menu.

Xi said the leaders "have respect for each other, we have built personal rapport,” and offered an olive branch in the form of two giant pandas for Zoo Atlanta, calling the animals an "envoy of friendship."
