Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS) president Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Thursday announced a nationwide movement to secure 50% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in legislative bodies, and unveiled a 11-point charter aimed at the empowerment of marginalised communities.
Addressing the Samajika Nyaya Telangana Sankalpa Sabha at Saroornagar, Ms. Kavitha called on the Centre to pass the BC Reservation Bill providing 50% representation to BCs in legislatures before the forthcoming Budget Session of the Parliament.
Warning of intensified agitation if the Bill is not enacted, she said the party would organise a massive ‘Chalo Delhi’ programme with thousands of activists.
Ms. Kavitha said her political decisions were guided by conviction and conscience and expressed confidence that the movement would bring about structural changes in society. She argued that had BCs received reservations in proportion to their population soon after Independence, India would have progressed further and emerged among the world’s leading powers.
