Why it matters
It documents the cultural history and artistic contributions of a significant figure in Indian classical music.
Vidwan Shri Guruvayur Dorai, affectionately known as Dorai mama , was not only a mridangam maestro but also a sangita vidwan with a profound understanding of the ruchi of Carnatic music. His accompaniment was so deeply musical that, in many concerts, it was difficult to distinguish the mridangam from the music itself. His incredible left-right balance on the instrument, masterful use of chapus and arai chapus , flowing sarvalaghus , and resonant gumkis , all delivered at precisely the right moments, made listening to him a truly delightful experience for all of us.
