Transport department pensioners launch sit-in demonstration over long-pending demands, benefits

Retired employees of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation staged a sit-in protest to demand the implementation of medical insurance schemes and the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme. They also called for the immediate payment of terminal benefits and wage arrears.
Why it matters
The protest underscores the financial insecurity faced by public sector retirees and the ongoing struggle for pension reform in India.
Members of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Retired Employees Welfare Association (REWA) and the State Express Transport Corporation Retired Employees Welfare Association on Tuesday staged a sit-in protest outside the TNSTC head office here.
The demonstration was organised to emphasise the urgent need to resolve mounting grievances and long-standing issues faced by the pensioners across the State.
The protesters raised several key demands, prominently calling for unconditional implementation of the medical insurance scheme for State Transport Corporation pensioners as stipulated in Government Order (G.O.) No. 123.
Addressing the gathering, REWA president S. Alagar demanded the immediate disbursal of retirement benefits of workers who retired from April 2026 and implementation of the Old Pension Scheme, based on wage settlement agreements, for employees who entered service after 2003.
