Transnet secures R6.6bn deal to improve locomotive reliability

Transnet has signed a R6.6 billion agreement with Wabtec to improve the reliability of its Class 43D and 44D locomotive fleets. The deal includes the implementation of predictive maintenance technology and technical support to boost South Africa's freight logistics performance.
Why it matters
Improving rail infrastructure is critical for South Africa's export economy and overall logistics competitiveness.
The long-term Material and Technical Support Agreement covers Transnet’s Class 43D (C30Aci) and 44D (ES40Aci) locomotives, which transport export commodities, containers and general freight across the country.
Under the agreement, Wabtec will supply components, technical expertise and predictive maintenance capabilities to Transnet Engineering. The package includes Wabtec’s Expert-on-Alert digital condition-monitoring platform, designed to help improve locomotive performance, maintenance turnaround times and fleet management.
