TRAI tells Airtel, Jio and Vi to clearly display prepaid packs by deadline
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has mandated that mobile service providers like Airtel, Jio, and Vi must clearly display prepaid plans and special tariff vouchers on their platforms. This regulation aims to improve transparency for consumers, particularly those in rural areas, by ensuring affordable voice and SMS vouchers are easily accessible.
Why it matters
It protects low-income consumers from hidden costs and ensures fair access to essential communication services in a highly competitive telecom market.
India's Telecom regulator TRAI does not seem to be happy with the way the country's mobile service providers -- Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea -- show prepaid packs and special tariff vouchers. In a notification issued recently, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked mobile service providers to prominently display mandatory recharge plans and special tariff vouchers on their websites, mobile apps and exclusive points of sale. These regulations are called the Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026.TRAI maintains that it has come with new guidelines after receiving complaints from consumers. It further claims that the regulator too has verified that the telecom operators had placed plans on their websites and apps in a manner that they were not easily visible.
