Traffic reorganisation sought to ease congestion in Coimbatore

Citizens’ Voice Coimbatore (CVC), a voluntary organisation, has urged the authorities to scientifically review traffic arrangements at major bottlenecks and introduce corrective measures on a trial basis to ease congestion in the city.
In a representation, CVC said congestion had increased considerably in recent weeks, resulting in loss of commuters’ time, fuel and productivity. It said the problem could not be addressed merely through construction of bridges and flyovers and called for better management of existing road space.
The organisation sought a location-wise review of major U-turns, particularly those at North Coimbatore, DSP Office, Sungam and Sundarapuram. It said some U-turns and long turning loops forced vehicles to merge across traffic streams, slowing down movement.
