The National Traditional Fishermen Federation has welcomed the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) maiden sectoral fishermen’s budget presented in the Legislative Assembly, lauding the newly formed government for delivering a visionary welfare blueprint for the welfare of the fishing community.
The budget was presented by Tamil Nadu Minister for Fisheries, A. Srinath, in the presence of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The fiscal package introduced a series of crucial hikes to relief allowances and compensation packages aimed at alleviating financial distress in coastal communities.
A key highlight of the budget is the upward revision of daily relief for the families of fishermen who fall into the sea and go missing while out at sea, with the allowance increasing from ₹350 to ₹600.
Similarly, the daily maintenance allowance for fishermen languishing in Sri Lankan prisons following arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy has been raised from ₹500 to ₹600.
