Traders’ body backs Madras HC order on Tamil signboards

The Madras High Court has set November 1 as the deadline for shops and commercial establishments to display their names in Tamil on signboards, in addition to English.
Welcoming the order, the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu president A.M. Vikramaraja said the traders’ body would extend its full support for its implementation. “There is no difference of opinion among traders and the association will work wholeheartedly to implement the court order,” he said.
Mr. Vikramaraja told reporters on Sunday (September 6, 2026), after inaugurating the association’s new office in Erode and distributing identity cards to traders, that corporate companies were indulging in excesses and alleged irregularities in online trade. The Centre and the State governments should enact a special law to protect traders, he said.
