In a study published in PLOS Medicine , researchers at the University of Oxford report that tracking how blood test results change over time may offer important clues to cancer risk that would otherwise be missed when looking at a single test result.
“In some instances, monitoring how a patient’s blood test results change over time could offer further value,” said Pradeep S. Virdee, PhD, senior medical statistician at the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. “A patient with a low-normal hemoglobin may not be considered high-risk if the result is interpreted in relation to a binary threshold, but a low-normal result following a period of high-normal results may represent an opportunity for cancer investigation.”
