New Zealand’s largest port, Port of Tauranga, has been granted fast-track approval today for an expansion bid extending its container berths and wharves.
The Stella Passage development involves extending the Sulphur Point container berth by 385m in two stages and the Mount Maunganui wharves by 315m on reclaimed land.
It also included converting existing cargo storage land within the port’s current footprint and dredging about 1.5 million cubic metres of the passage bed.
Port of Tauranga chief financial officer Simon Kebbell announced today in a media release the Stella Passage was approved under the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024, subject to conditions.
He said the approval was “very welcome” news.
“The Stella Passage development is vital strategic infrastructure to support future freight growth for New Zealand.
