New Zealand had a July record for overseas visitors and finally surpassed pre-Covid visitor levels for a single month.
Hotel Council Aotearoa strategic director James Doolan said the industry would broadly welcome today’s news about visitor numbers.
“International visitors spend more on a daily basis than domestic travellers.”
He said that was the case worldwide and overseas visitors often spent at times when domestic demand was not so high.
“With deliberate and smart policy, smart settings, we can certainly handle additional visitors.”
Tourist numbers from Australia, China and the US were up on a year earlier.
“July 2026 is the first month overseas visitor arrivals have exceeded their pre-Covid level, when compared with the same month in 2019,” Stats NZ said today.
Doolan said many nations overseas had escaped post-Covid doldrums faster than Australia and New Zealand had.
