Tobacco use and increased risk of ACL and meniscus injury and surgical intervention: a matched-cohort study of 3 million patients
A large-scale retrospective study of 3 million patients indicates that tobacco use is associated with a higher incidence of ACL and meniscus knee injuries. Tobacco users also showed a higher likelihood of requiring surgical intervention for meniscus tears and experienced longer hospital stays.
Why it matters
The findings provide clinical evidence linking smoking to orthopedic injury risks and recovery outcomes, which could influence patient counseling and surgical planning.
