TNPCB asks public to opt for eco-friendly Vinayagar idols
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has issued guidelines for the upcoming Vinayagar Chathurthi festival, urging the public to use eco-friendly materials for idols. The board strictly prohibits the use of Plaster of Paris, toxic chemical dyes, and single-use plastics to protect water bodies.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has urged the public to celebrate Vinayagar Chathurthi in an eco-friendly manner and immerse idols only at locations notified by the respective district administrations.
The guidelines issued ahead of the festival stipulate that only idols made of natural, biodegradable and eco-friendly materials such as traditional clay and mud should be used. Idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP), plastic and thermocol (polystyrene) are not permitted for immersion in water bodies.
The TNPCB has also advised against the use of toxic and non-biodegradable chemical dyes and oil paints. Eco-friendly, water-based, biodegradable and non-toxic natural dyes have been recommended instead. Decorative materials made of dried flowers, straw and other natural materials may be used.
